Jackson Elliott took out the Botanic to Bridge title for the third time on Sunday 18 August 2013, along with first place prize of $2,500, after completing the 8km course in a record time of 24 minutes 25 seconds – a speedy 3.03 minutes/kilometre.
The Botanic to Bridge is a favourite on Elliott’s running calendar, having also won the 8km event in 2010 and 2011.
"The Botanic to Bridge is a really interesting and challenging course. I also love to travel and get out to regional centres as much as I can," Elliott said.
Elliott has been running competitively for five years and particularly loves the thrill of racing, as well as the benefits of staying fit and healthy.
"Maintaining an active lifestyle is so important and the Botanic to Bridge is a great community event that encourages and celebrates healthy living."
Elliott has seen firsthand how the event has grown since the inaugural Botanic to Bridge in 2010.
"It has been great to see community participation build over the years, not only in terms of the run itself but also the Healthy Living Expo at the finish line."
The amount of funds raised from the event also continues to grow, with event presenter Gladstone Ports Corporation donating over $82,000 to community organisations and $105,000 to local schools since 2010.
When asked for some words of wisdom for young athletes or anyone looking to give running a go, Elliott is a firm believer that consistency is the key.
"Running is achievable for anyone regardless of age or level of fitness. The key is being consistent in your training, just keep getting out there. It also helps to find events such as the Botanic to Bridge to use as goals that you can work towards."
Elliott is looking forward to returning to Gladstone in 2014 and completing the 8km course in under 24 minutes.
