Over 60 people gathered in the Kullaroo House courtyard Tuesday morning for the 2012 Botanic to Bridge official launch, among them the 2012 community beneficiaries.

The Botanic to Bridge provides a unique opportunity to not only encourage active and healthy lifestyles, but to also raise funds for local schools and the community.

Several local organisations nominated to be chosen as the community beneficiary, and GPC Corporate and Employee Relations General Manager, Trina Schmidt, announced the successful applicants at the launch.

“The submissions for this year’s Botanic to Bridge Beneficiary were extremely difficult to judge as they are all providing such a valuable service to the community,” Ms Schmidt said.

“The two community beneficiaries we have chosen to support for the 2012 Botanic to Bridge are Special Olympics QLD- Gladstone Region and The Mission to Seafarers.”

Through the support of sponsors and public registrations it is envisaged there will be enough funds raised to complete the two projects.”

Chairperson of Special Olympics QLD- Gladstone Region Debbie Knust said when they received the call say that we were one of the Botanic to Bridge beneficiaries there was so much excitement.

“From the support of the Botanic to Bridge we hope to attract more volunteers or experienced coaches, which will allow us to engage more sports for our current athletes and also encourage new participants.”

The Mission to Seafarers will be using the funds to help connect families and enhance the seafarers’ way of life.

“This is perfect timing for us,” Chaplin Honorio Hincapie said.

“I have been working with seafarers who had been at sea for three months and had not spoken to their families for this period of time.

“This funding will allow us to update our technology and allow these families to reconnect, which is a very important thing.”

Both beneficiaries have kicked off their training regimes and hope to see you on the course on August 19.
